San Diego Hummingbirds Photo Gallery

All of these were photographed in our back yard in north west San Diego county. Some of the photos on the page may have been then elsewhere such as a Costa but at least some where at taken at our feeders. August is the most active time of the year with both residents and an occasional migrant.

Status	Year round resident. Most common.	Year round resident. Less common than Anna	Migrant only and just a couple in August	Only seen as migrant in our yard in August but many individuals for several weeks	Migrant only and just a couple in August

Male tail		No notch on tail feather towards center	Notch on tail feather towards center
Male back		Green back	Orange back but a small percentage have green back. Notch tail feather the best identifier and in San Diego only seen normally at 2 migration times.
Male Head				Black is under the chin and then abruptly changes to purple gorget.
